Highlands Hammock State Park

We spent part of spring break camping at Highlands Hammock State Park. The corona virus was starting to cause shut downs and we weren’t sure what would happen (they did end up closing the campground after we left). However, camping is the best way to isolate yourself (well, besides staying home, but camping is more fun!).

Campground at Highlands Hammock State Park
Our home for a few days.

We love Florida State Parks! They’re well maintained and the campgrounds are always nice. This one was bigger than what we normally stay at, and there wasn’t a lot of green space between campsites, but it was still nice. They only have water and electric hookups and there’s a dump station. We try to be careful how much water we use in the camper and use the campground bath houses. We did take our blue boy (which happens to be gray) so that we could drain our tanks if needed.

We almost always take our bikes – it gives my boys something to do at the campground aka burn some of their neverending energy. Lots of times there are nice bike trails around the park as well. The trail here was a nice hard packed one with several geocaches along it.

They also have nine hiking trails in the park. My favorite was this one although it’s currently the dry season and the swamp isn’t very, well, swampy.

Once you get to the swamp, this is the boardwalk. I can’t imagine what it must be like during the rainy season (we are planning to go back).

Swamp Trail Boardwalk

This mama gator and her baby were perfectly content to just watch us from across the swamp. I imagine if it was the rainy season we would’ve seen a lot more gators!

This turtle was catching some sun. There was another one swimming around munching on some leaves.

The other boardwalks at the park are equally as nice. They are easy to walk on and have plenty of benches so you can sit and relax.

Some of the other trails do not have boardwalks.

One of them leads to this amazing 900+ year old oak tree!

We always look for an ice cream place when we camp – preferably a locally owned place. We weren’t sure anything would be open because corona was in full swing and groups of ten or more were discouraged. Fortunately, Sebring Soda and Ice Cream Works was open. They had a nice variety of sodas in glass bottles and lots of ice cream flavors!

My First Stitch Fix Box

I hopped on the Stitch Fix bandwagon the other day when The Humbled Homemaker posted a $75 code good for your first fix. I figured that should cover at least one item and surely they could pick one thing that I would like, right? I filled out the form – made sure to specify that I live in Florida and don’t wear a lot of cool weather clothes (probably my first mistake was doing this while most of the country is still in the middle of winter!).

First up is a lightweight cardigan. It’s navy which I like, but it’s a cardigan…I don’t wear sweaters much – maybe two or three weeks out of the year. I tried it on and while it kinda fit, the sleeves were really long on me and there’s no pockets (I really like having pockets!). Definitely not often enough to justify a $38 sweater.

Next is a 3/4 sleeve knit top. The first thing that popped into my head when I saw it was T-rex arms. I’m not a fan of 3/4 length sleeves – I’m either pushing them up to make them short sleeve or trying to pull them down to make them long sleeve. It’s equally awkward on me as well. The cuffs are kinda tight and if I try to reach for something, the shirt pulls oddly. Either way, it’s not worth $38 to me.

Next was this cute cold shoulder top. I think I like it (I tried it on and I’m not sure about the cold shoulder style) and it might be worth the $34, but then I remembered that I have a pattern to make a shirt just like this!

I really like the twist in the sleeve hem. I think I’ll have to print the pattern and make myself one!

These distressed boyfriend jeans were such a disappointment! I specifically said I wouldn’t wear anything distressed – I don’t want holes in my brand new clothes!

I really wanted a decent pair of shorts or capris, but again I’m guessing that my timing was off since it’s still winter in most of the country. However, I did mention in my style comments that I live in FL and was looking for shorts & T’s.

Did I mention I was disappointed? I have a hard time buying ready-to-wear shorts/capris that fit me well. I was really hoping for a pair.

Then, there were these shoes! At first I was a little bummed that they sent me shoes…I really wanted clothes, but then I tried them on and they’re actually comfy. I’ve been looking for a new pair of sneakers that I can wear to work and these will fit the bill. Totally worth the $79! Of course, I’ll only actually pay $4 because I’ll use my $75 credit. Pretty good deal if you ask me!

If I had liked everything, there’s a 25% buy all discount plus my $75 credit which would’ve made my total $110.25. That’s a pretty sweet deal…if I liked everything. I did comment on everything they sent me and expressed my disappointment in my stylist. I felt like she didn’t actually read what I wrote and just sent a “standard” first box.

Fostering Itty Bitty Kitties

One of the things we’ve done in the past is foster kittens (and a dog, once). We took an unplanned break for a little over a year…for whatever reason we didn’t hear from our local humane society. Then, in April we got a call asking if we would be willing to foster 3 2-week old kittens. Of course I said yes! Look how tiny they are!

New Itty Bitty Black Kitties

Can they be any cuter? So tiny!

Little Black Kitten

These kittens needed to be fed about every 4 hours. Just like having a newborn baby!

Bottle feeding kitten

All three of my kids were eager to help feed them! I would prepare the bottles and they would take turns. My teenage daughter frequently got up with me in the night to feed them – such a big help especially since we had to be up early to get ready for school.

It was neat to watch them grow – from wobbly little kittens who kind of staggered around and mostly would eat and sleep. Oh, and did I mention – kittens don’t pee and poop on their own. Normally momma cat would lick their bottoms to make them go…so, besides middle of the night feedings, we also had to wipe them with a damp cloth to help them.

Three little black kittens

About two weeks into our fostering, we got a wonderful call – a mamma cat had been brought back in by another foster. If we were willing to try, we could see if she would accept our foster kittens. We were definitely willing! Peaches made a great surrogate momma cat!

PeachesAndKittens

It was so nice to not have to get up in the night to feed them, plus she was a sweet cat.

Peaches and Kittens Napping

Under her care, they slowly grew.

Growing Kittens

They became playful little things! Climbing and chasing everything.

Black Kittens Playing

Eventually came the day they were old enough and big enough to be spayed/neutered and then put up for adoption. It’s always a happy/sad day for us. We’re sad to see them go, but we know that we’ve helped them be well socialized little kitties who are ready for their forever home. Plus, taking care of kittens is a lot of work and we were ready for a break.

Not a very long break though – they had more itty bitty kitties that needed fostering. We had to wait until school was out for the summer to get them. The last few days of school always seem to drag….now they seemed to drag even more! Finally, the last day came and on our way home, we stopped and picked up our next batch of foster kitties.

Feather in a Hand

These guys also had to be fed about every 4 hours. Fortunately we didn’t have to get up for school, so middle of the night feedings weren’t so bad.

Feeding Chief

The little black kitties lived in our daughter’s room. That worked, except kittens are messy. They’re just learning to use a litter box and frequently choose other places to go. To avoid a repeat, these kitties stayed on the lanai during the day and then spent the night in her room.

Kittens in a Basket

They loved being out there! They could bask in the sun all day. Plus, we put some fun toys out for them like this cardboard carpet roll.

Kitten in a tube

We would find them curled up asleep in random places like on the corner of an afghan.

It’s amazing how fast they grow!

We don’t realize how much they’ve grown, until we compare pictures!

Feather big enough to be adopted

Kitten crashes are so cute! They just go and go until they can’t.

Kitten crashes are so cute!

Because the kittens were on our lanai and much more visible to our resident cat (as opposed to being in a separate room where he can’t see them), we decided to try introducing them. We really didn’t know what to expect. Our cat is a male (fixed, but still…). He surprised us! He gave the kittens baths, was tolerant of their constant attempts to play with his tail, and even played with them a bit.

FooFoo became a surrogate kitty-dad

All to soon it was time to say good bye.

Saying good-bye is never easy, but I always remind my kids that by taking care of the kittens and loving them, we helped make them adoptable.

What to Do With Lemons

We have a lemon tree that produces an abundance of lemons every year.  That would be great except we don’t care for lemons (or homemade lemonade) and even if we did, who can eat bags and bags of them?  I hate to waste them so I’m constantly trying to figure out what to do with them.  I normally give away as many as I can, juice some of them and freeze the juice in ice cube trays to have for baking or lemon water.  After that, I’m lost and my compost heap is well fed.

Lemon TreeMy sister-in-law gave me two great ideas!  One was cookies – while I’m not a fan of lemon flavor, the rest of my family loves it.  SIL found a cookie recipe and made them for us.  They were actually pretty good….so I made a batch and they came out just as good!  There are actually a bunch of recipes on her site that use lemons…I may have to try some of them out too.

Lemon cookies

She also found a recipe for dishwasher soap.  I’ve made homemade laundry soap and use it from time to time (I’ve been finding great deals on my favorite brands at CVS so I haven’t made laundry soap in ages!).  I made dishwasher soap once and it was a flop!  It hardened and was a pain to measure out.  This time, I only made a single batch and I followed the directions carefully.  I’ve been using it for a couple weeks now and it works just as good as the name brand I normally buy. Plus it’s a whole lot cheaper!  I didn’t have to buy anything (I had the coarse salt leftover from last time and the other stuff I had on hand).  I will say that I did NOT strain my mixture.  I don’t have a strainer, so I just blended it really, really well!

Making dish washer soap from lemons

I’ve been juicing lemons and freezing them in egg trays (I think my ice cube trays met with an unfortunate end), I’m going to chop up some lemons for future batches of dish soap, and I’m freezing some lemon peel for the cookies.  I still need more ideas (seriously, we had at least 5 shopping bags full!), but I’m not putting as many lemons in my compost heap this year!

Juicing lemons

Do you like lemons?  Any great ideas for what to do with an over abundance of them?  I really do hate feeding them to my compost.

What to Do With Leftover Turkey

What to do with Leftover Turkey

At Christmas, we were given a precooked turkey.  I didn’t need it since we already had plans for Christmas dinner so I put it in the freezer.  A couple weeks ago I pulled it out (it was taking up a lot of room!) and let it defrost in the fridge for a whole week (it was frozen solid!).  We grilled it (and by we, I mean my parents).  It was almost 18 pounds and even with nine people eating, there was a lot leftover.  We reheated some of it, but some people are not fond of reheated turkey. *coughcough*DH*coughcough*  I love it cold!  When I can convince my kids to try it, they like it too.  This time they finally tried it while I was grinding it up.

Eating cold turkey

I’ve had this grinder forever.  It was my mom’s and she decided that I used it more than she did, so it’s mine now.

Old fashioned meat turkey grider

After picking most of the meat off the carcass and grinding it all, I ended up with a nice bowl of ground turkey.

Ground Turkey

If you like turkey meatloat, then you’re all set.  However, my family is not into blonde meatloaf, so I mix it with ground beef and then freeze it.  Sometimes I make a turkey salad with it – add a bit of Miracle Whip, some onion salt, garlic salt, maybe some celery seed.  Sometimes I also add some pickle relish to it.  Mix it up and put it in a pita.  Mmm!!
